Sam G. Hughes

Sam George Hughes of Albany, NY and Bellingham, MA died by suicide on March 27, 2024 after a long courageous battle with a mental health disease which he fought so hard against. Sam was a remarkable person with an unpredictable spirit. Born in 2004 to parents Nicole (O’Brien) Buckley and John Hughes. Confident and cool, there was no one Sam couldn’t make smile with his rich humor and innate kindness. A team player, Sam thrived on the basketball court and baseball field. The silence now without his dribbling basketball at all hours will be harsh and empty. He preferred candy to food even at 19, and you’d never catch him in a pair of jeans. He preferred colorful clothes, bright blues and greens which brought out his blue eyes. Sam never wanted to let anyone see how much he struggled, and his extremely long and tortured battle with mental illness was overwhelming. He was searching for peace in life in which he has now found. Sam is survived by his 5 siblings Jack Hughes, Jack Buckley, Molly Hughes, Juliana Buckley, and Ben Hughes and parents Nicole Buckley, John Hughes, and step father John Buckley. Sam also leaves behind his grandparents Robert Hughes (predeceased) and Connie of Albany, NY. His grandparents William O’Brien and Marybeth O’Brien of Manomet, MA. Grandmother Michaela McCabe (predeceased), and his great grandmother Lorraine McCabe of Brockton, MA. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, and cousins who loved him dearly. Sam attended school in Bellingham, MA through his junior year, until he moved to Albany, NY and graduated high school in January of 2022. He was an athlete in Bellingham Youth Sports, as well as at Bellingham High School, playing both baseball and basketball. Memorial services will be held on Thursday morning April 4th at 11 am at Magin and Keegin Funeral Home in Albany NY, relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Wednesday April 3rd from 4-7. An additional service will be held in Bellingham MA at Cartier Funeral Home, details to follow.
